Tuesday was Mabes' hundredth day of school. I've heard of all sorts of "hundred day" kindergarten celebrations, but I have to say, I loved Mabes' assignment, even if I was a little overwhelmed: she had to bring a hat with 100 things on it. At first, Mabes wanted to bring a hat with 100 of her toys on it. We talked about it more, and decided to do flowers. I was thinking I'd stick 100 foam flower stickers to a hat and call it a day, but then I had flashbacks to being the creative underachiever in 10th grade biology and reconsidered (that's a story for another day). I talked to my friend Karin and she said she her daughter wanted buttons, so she sewed on the buttons. Crazy, I thought. Who would sew 100 buttons to a hat? Not me!
The more I thought about it, the more I thought a ridiculous flower-covered hat would be awesome. And since Mabes isn't gentle, I realized I'd have to sew the flowers on. So I ate my words (something I seem to be doing a lot lately) and spent a good chunk of time on Saturday and Monday sewing flowers to a hat. When Dave rolled his eyes at me, I pointed out that since it would be a well-made hat, Mabes could wear it should we get invited to Prince William & Kate's wedding. It could happen.
And I found a cute ladybug button, so we decided to do 99 flowers and 1 ladybug. Mabes was quite relieved by this, as she didn't want anyone to think that she was wearing a 100 flower hat to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Hundred Flowers Movement. *That* would be embarrassing! Kindergartners can be cruel if they suspect Maoist sympathies.
So here's Mabes in her hat:
It's ridiculous and reminds me of spring and I love it. But I really don't think it's dressy enough for a royal wedding, so we're back to square one on that.
And while we're on the subject, here's Annabelle in the awesome hat my good friend/former roommate Emily knit for her. I love this hat so much, and it always makes Annabelle smile. That could be because I'm laughing at her when I put it on her, though.

It is always amazing to me that 100 things don't look as much as I thought they would. Like flowers. If you had asked me to estimate the number of flowers on that hat, I probably would have said 40!
She and BabyBelle look adorable in their hats. That is enough to get you into ANY royal wedding.
I agree Wanda, who could turn our granddaughters away with hats like that.
I'm the same as Mom... I figured in the first picture of the hat that you'd only done half of the flowers. My powers of estimation are clearly wanting.
And Annabelle's hat is awesome and hilarious.
Yeah, I was hoping the flowers would completely cover the hat. Should have done bigger flowers, huh? But I remember when we'd count out 100 pennies or 100 marshmallows, and I'd always think, "that's it?"
I think I should continue sewing flowers on the hat so there's one for each day of kindergarten.
Aww I love the hundred things hat. so cute. That is a fun school project. Oh and the one ladybug was super cute. Great idea! Babybelle's hat was ador too. love it! :)
